The Soccer Shop Waikato Cup & Plate

The finals of both The Soccer Shop Waikato Cup and Plate, for both men and women, were played at Cambridge FC's John Kerkhof Park over the weekend.

Men

Melville United have taken home the Waikato Cup to cap a memorable day in the club’s cup history.

On a day United’s first team reached the final of New Zealand football’s oldest competition, the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup, Melville’s Waikato Division 1 team won The Soccer Shop Waikato Cup at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park.

The Melville United Nobs (see photograph) beat Huntly Thistle 1-0 to collect the Waikato Cup as news was filtering through from Auckland that their first team had defeated Bay Olympic in the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup semi-final.

Prior to the Waikato Cup final, Hamilton Wanderers Classics won The Soccer Shop Waikato Plate with a 4-0 victory against Otorohanga.

Otorohanga were trying for their third piece of silverware in as many years but were outplayed by Wanderers at John Kerkhof Park.

Women

West Hamilton United have retained The Soccer Shop Waikato Cup after beating Tokoroa 1-0 in this year’s final.

The team, who took the cup last year when they beat Cambridge in the final, took out a close encounter but benefitted from experienced players who kept their nerve in the knockout.

In the early game, Otorohanga won The Soccer Shop Waikato Plate, beating Te Aroha Cobras 4-2.

The victory provided some compensation for Otorohanga who lost the men’s Plate final the previous day.
