BOARD PROFILES

WaiBOP Football Federation is governed by a Board of Directors, with three positions being elected by the Federation’s Members, while another four positions are appointed by an independent selection committee.  The Board positions are for three year terms.

Depending upon the skill sets required, co-opted positions can also be introduced for two year terms.

The 2021 WaiBOP Football Board of Directors are:


DAVID IRELAND  (CHAIR)  (ELECTED)                                  

With 20+ years of governance experience across football and the non-Government sector, David brings a wealth of knowledge on the challenges faced by not for profit organisations within the community. Primarily working within the Mental Health & Disability sectors has allowed David to gain a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people across a wide spectrum of stakeholders and communities.

David has a tertiary qualification in Management gained from the University of Waikato. This combined with many years of experience managing teams allows David to bring a broad range of skills and insights to any roles he is involved in.  

David is a life member of Te Awamutu Football Club, having been President for 15 years, so has a clear understanding of the challenges facing clubs at all levels. Like many others David has been involved in football since a young age. Including roles as coach, manager, parent, supporter, club administrator and now referee. David is currently the WaiBOP Board Chair, an active referee and a member of the New Zealand Football Diversity and Inclusion committee. He also coaches the Waikato Wasps Powerchair Football team and has been the coach of the New Zealand Powerchair Football Development team for the past year. 

 

MARK BROWNING (DEPUTY CHAIR) (ELECTED)

Mark is employed by Tetra Pak (New Zealand) Limited in a role which has multiple cross functional requirements, including Sales and Marketing, Manufacturing, Logistics and Technical Services. He has a tertiary qualification from the Waikato University in Management. He utilises his skills to collaborate across multiple sector and industry groups and has the commercial acumen to secure value-added agreements and strengthen the relationships these agreements create. 

Mark has been involved in football for most of his life either as a player, coach (both at junior and senior level) or as a club administrator. Mark played Northern League football for Hamilton Wanderers and represented Waikato at age group level. During his 26 years at Hamilton Wanderers he was a member of the Management Committee for 10 years and Club President for 3 years thus understands the challenge’s clubs face on a day-to-day basis.


MERV WILLIAMS (APPOINTED)

Merv works as a GM Marketing with international sealants company Soudal of Belgium. Prior to this Merv has a background in agency marketing (over the last two decades) dealing with a huge assortment of commercial and government clients throughout New Zealand. 

Merv has a long association with the game within the WaiBOP Federation. He has played football for over 30 years, has coached Federation Representative team's and currently coaches the Melville United Federation Premiership side. 

Merv has been on the WaiBOP board for 11 years and was also Board Chair of the ASB premiership franchise team – WaiBOP United. Merv provides input on marketing, communications and football in general.


PIPPA MAHOOD (MNZM) (APPOINTED)

Pippa Mahood came to New Zealand in 1976, after training as a state registered nurse in the UK and being in charge of an inpatient hospice facility there. In 1981 she formed the Waikato Community Hospice Service, was a board trustee for 27 years, and was made a life member of Hospice Waikato in 2008. Pippa was also on the inaugural Hospice New Zealand board for six years.

Pippa served on the Hamilton City Council for 27 years, retiring from the council in October 2013and as a result was recognised with the Freedom of the City of Hamilton. She is currently in her fourth term as an elected member of the Waikato District Health Board. She continues to play an active role in the Hamilton and Waikato community, and holds several positions on a wide variety of organisations and boards. One such position is on the board of Waikato Bay of Plenty Football. Appointed as a community representative in 2014, despite having little knowledge of football, Pippa likes a challenge, and her experience in other organisations is of great value, hoping to improve the strategic direction and relevance for football to the whole community throughout the WaiBOP region”.


CHERI-LEE ATKINSON (APPOINTED)

Cheri-Lee is of Ngati Toa and Ngati Koata descent. Raised in several rural towns in the North Island, Cheri-Lee now calls Hamilton her home. An Associate with Tompkins Wake, Lawyers, Cheri-Lee advises clients on complex Trust matters, both private and charitable. Her legal experience also includes commercial transactions and Corporate structural design and contracts. 
 
Cheri-Lee has a strong desire to contribute to the Waikato community. She believes this role with the Federation is a stewardship and understands the importance of protecting the values of football in New Zealand. Having played football in High School and at University, Cheri-Lee has naturally become involved again through her children’s participation in the sport. Cheri-Lee is also a committee member of the Hillcrest United Football Club and coaches.
