Copa 71 - The first (unofficial) women's world cup


An award-winning film about the first - unofficial - Women’s World Cup starts screening tomorrow throughout New Zealand.

The documentary, which tells the story of the 1971 Women’s Soccer World Cup, is executive produced by Serena & Venus Williams, and Alex Morgan.

Told by the pioneering women who participated in the tournament, and built from archive footage unseen for fifty years, this is the story of a tournament that has been written out of sporting history — until now.

The 1971 World Cup "Copa 71" was not sanctioned by FIFA, and women players were banned from taking part. Mexico’s biggest stadiums were filled — the 110,000-seat Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, and the 56,000-seat Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara — setting attendance records that still stand today.
