Mid-season review: Lotto NRFL Women's Premiership & Championship

There are three WaiBOP teams involved in women's Lotto NRFL leagues in 2025. FC Tauranga Moana (FCTM) are our sole Premiership team while Waikato rivals, Melville United and Cambridge FC, compete in the Championship.

It's been a tough old Premiership season for FCTM, securing only two wins from their thirteen games. The second of these, however, came yesterday against bottom side, Hibiscus Coast by a 4-0 margin. These precious three points lifted FCTM ahead of their opponents on the table and could be crucial in the race to avoid relgaton. In a league where teams play each other three times, the encounter between these two teams at Links Ave on August 23 could well decide who stays in the Premiership for 2026.

Melville United look odds on for promotion from the Championship. Despite suffering their first defeat of the season yesterday, they hold a five point lead at the top of the table with eight games to go. Melville also holds local bragging rights, winning the first two Waikato derbies over Cambridge. They'll be looking to seal promotion in, or by, the final derby of the campaign on August 24.

Cambridge has made a good fist of their first go at this level. With four wins so far, including a vital 4-0 victory over Central United yesterday, they look well set for another season at this level in 2026.
